What is the Kamehameha Song Contest?

The Song Contest is an institution that is exclusive to Kamehameha and is a tradition that dates back 102 years. It is a musical competition that all students participate in.

Where was the first school Song Contest held in Hawaii?

In 1952, the School for Girls and School for Boys Senior Divisions participated in a joint competition for the first time in Kekhaupi’o, the newly built fieldhouse that served as the venue for the event. Since the song contest was transferred to the Neal Blaisdell Center in 1964, that venue has consistently drawn crowds that are able to completely fill it.

How did Kamehameha’s Golden Age of music begin?

Frank P. Kernohan was the director of music at the Boys School from 1935 to 1952. During that time, the Hawaiian repertoire at the school was expanded and made more popular because to his straightforward and uncomplicated adaptations of ancient standards. The year 1950 saw the entrance of Harold B. Turney, which is considered by many to be the beginning of Kamehameha’s ‘golden era of music.’
