Utilization of the App
- Adding Song Packs Simply choose a bucket from the drop-down menu that appears after clicking the “+ Add Songs” button.
- Updating Song Packs Once downloaded, all song packs will be automatically detected and playable in StepMania the next time you run the game (this is because the download path for each bucket is automatically added to the AdditionalSongFolders variable in StepMania’s Preferences.ini file). - Are you able to break it down into its component parts? Date and time of last edit: January 11, 4:43 pm To begin, let me say: If you have downloaded Stepmania, then you will have a very large folder on your computer in which all of the game’s data is stored.
- There are multiple sub-folders included within this main folder, which I will assume is named “Stepmania 5.” You will need to double click after navigating directly upward into the “music” folder.
You will notice a lot of sub-folders, and each one of them will represent a different music. In every song folder, there is always at least one music file, in addition to image and text files. Simply dragging the music folders into the “songs/Stepmania 5” folder (not the.zip or.rar file, but each song individually) is all that is required of you when you download new songs for Stepmania 5.
At this point, all that’s left to do is start the game back up (it should have been shut off the entire time), and you’ll be good to go! If you are still having trouble, please submit any relevant screenshots or information. BOING! Where can I get the tracks to download on my computer? Where are StepMania songs saved?
What about files compressed with the.SMzip extension? – In most cases, StepMania will use the.SMzip format to install and extract tracks for you so that you don’t have to bother about folders or anything else (generally there is only one song, theme, or announcer per,SMzip file).
This actually does not work all that well.because Stepmania installs these songs normally each with separate folders. Because of this, attempting to play your music in the song selection screen may be a major problem, ESPECIALLY if you have more than one hundred files. If you have a file with the extension.SMzip, the best thing you can do with it is to convert it to a.zip file and extract its contents using that format.
Alternatively, if you use Winzip, it will automatically recognize the file as a.zip archive and allow you to extract its contents using that format. After you have extracted it, a folder will appear; however, DO NOT copy it over just yet. Instead, open up the folder, and inside there should be another folder that contains the song’s name.
How do I add music to StepMania Linux?
Posts: 1 Beginning of January 2016 Hello, I’ve just installed StepMania 5 for Windows, and although it only comes with three tracks, I decided to search for more ones on the forum and then download them. However, they turned into files on my desktop, and I am at a loss as to how to import them into stepmania.
Because of the limited number of times I can perform the three songs featured in the demo, it would be amazing if someone could assist me. Kyzentun Kyzentun Posts: 925 Beginning of October 2013 Tracks are often shared via zipped packages that include many songs each. After unzipping the pack, you will be presented with a folder that is full with music folders.
This is a collection of songs. After you have unzipped the music packs, navigate to %appdata%/StepMania 5.0/Songs/ and place the individual song packs there. You’ll hear from a lot of folks that you should place music packs in the Songs folder that’s part of the Stepmania 5 installation.
But if you do that, when you upgrade your system, you’ll have to relocate the tunes somewhere else. When you upgrade, you won’t have to relocate the music if you utilize the appdata folder instead. On OS X, the folder with the same name may be found in /Library/Application Support/StepMania 5/Songs. If you’re using Linux, navigate to /.stepmania-5.0/Songs/.
Themes, NoteSkins, and any other type of content each have their own comparable folders. til Fixing bugs is what Kyzentun does for breakfast – shakesoda: The reason I continue to play League of Legends despite this is because you’re an ITG player. - Hi Kyzentun.
- I have followed your instructions and placed the music pack within the song folder; but, the game does not recognize the songs within the song pack as being part of a pack but rather as individual songs, if you understand what I mean.
- Because the game is unable to recognize packs for some reason, I have to navigate through ALL of the music that I possess in order to play a certain song.
I have no idea why this is the case. It was effective in the past, but not any longer. In light of the fact that it is somewhat irritating and that it has caused me to waste a significant amount of time, I would appreciate any assistance with this matter.
Many thanks, =) P.S. : I have tried a number of different versions of Stepmania, but I continue to receive the same error:'( Date and time of last edit: March 5, 2016 6:29 pm Kyzentun Kyzentun Posts: 925 Beginning of October 2013 Stepmania is perfectly capable of identifying music groupings. There is a good chance that you are missing some crucial point in the explanation.
When you enter the folder that is labeled “Songs,” you notice that there is also a folder labeled “Stepmania 5” A pack or group folder can be identified by its name, in this case “Stepmania 5.” When you open it up, you will notice that it contains files labeled “Goin’ Under,” “Springtime,” and “Mechatribe Assault.” Those are music folders we’re looking at.
- You’ll find an.ogg file within each song folder that contains the song’s music, an.ssc file that contains the chart, and a few pictures that are used for the song’s backdrop, banner, and other image fields.
- You will be able to place song folders within another group folder if you create a new folder inside the Songs folder and call it “Songs.” This new folder will be considered a group folder.
The songs that belong to the various categories will be located on the music wheel’s various parts, which you will be able to navigate between using the arrow keys. For instance, when I open the folder that is titled “Songs,” I see that it has files labeled “Stepmania 5”, “ITG,” and “FFR.” I have included “Stepmania 5”, “ITG,” and “FFR” as selectable options on the music wheel in the game.
When I open up a certain area, I am able to view the songs that are contained within it and select one of them. shakesoda: then why do you still play lol cuz you’re an ITG player. til Kyzentun patches bugs for breakfast. Hi Kyzentun, it doesn’t work. It works just like this: StepMania Community Keyboard Megapack, Volume 1 includes 5 Songs from StepMania (Aperson) Target a large number of files within the system (such as background, banner, audio, sm) The game is unable to recognize the pack.
- I’m not sure if the fact that I installed SM5 on an external hard drive is the reason why it isn’t working, but I though I should write it down here just in case.
- I’m sorry if I’m being such a pain in the neck.
- EDIT: It appears that I was correct: D Since I relocated my Songs folder to the Stepmania installation on the computer, it now functions properly; however, the same cannot be said for my external hard drive.

The StepMania installation folder is not the same as the StepMania user data folder. The StepMania installation folder is where the actual StepMania game is installed, as well as where you probably installed songs or themes. The StepMania user data folder is where your Preferences.ini and your profiles are stored.
- The Windows Application Data folder contains this subfolder inside of it.
- This folder is set to be hidden by default, and Windows purposefully makes it a little bit tough to access it.
- To access it quickly and easily, simply hit the Windows logo key in combination with the letter R to bring up the “run” box, and then in that box, type “%APPDATA%” (and press enter to open it).
You should be able to see the StepMania user data folder after you reach that point. When you navigate to that location, the Preferences.ini file will be found under the Save folder.
